Harnessing Your Potential and Achieving Great Things: Pushing Beyond Self-Imposed Limits

Writer's picture: Katy LloydKaty Lloyd

The story goes like this: a young boy was at the circus with his father when he noticed an elephant tethered to a peg with a string. He noticed that despite its size, the elephant didn't move far from the peg. When the boy questioned about why it was not moving, his father told him that many years ago, when the elephant was still a baby, it had been tied to the peg with a rope. As it grew bigger, it was replaced with strings which were too weak to hold back its size and strength. that was strong enough to hold

it's weight. As it grew it got used to the limits of the rope and it was gradually replaced with the string. Not the elephant did not even try to move away.

The moral of this parable is that no matter how small or weak something may seem at first, it can become powerful if we keep feeding into it. Our own limitations may appear insignificant in comparison to our goals and ambitions but they can grow and evolve into something much more formidable if we don’t keep them in check. We must remember that as individuals, we have tremendous potential within us and should strive every day to break through our own glass ceilings by recognizing our self-imposed limits and pushing ourselves past them.

I found this was something that help me back early on in my Master's, and I had to constantly check in that I was not holding myself back. I was here to push myself and learn new things so I had to make sure I wasn't slipping back into what was easy and what I knew. I needed to push past my self-imposed limits.

Identifying and acknowledging your self-imposed limits

One of the most difficult parts about achieving success is recognizing and acknowledging that you have self-imposed limits. These can be mental, physical, or emotional barriers that are preventing you from reaching your full potential. It's easy to get caught up in negative thought patterns which can make it difficult to break through your own glass ceiling.

Value of a positive growth mindset

Developing a positive mindset is essential for anyone wanting to break through their own glass ceiling. It is important that individuals take the time to recognize any limiting beliefs and judgments they may have about themselves, so that they can actively work on shifting their perspective. When individuals create an empowering narrative, it helps them reach their goals and motivates them to push further.

When attempting to break through your own glass ceiling, it is inevitable that obstacles or setbacks will arise along the way. It is important to take any such barriers as opportunities for growth and development, rather than viewing them as insurmountable obstacles. Developing a sense of resilience and persistence is essential in order to overcome any difficulties that come up during these times when you re pushing yourself.

Take the wins

Celebrating successes is an important part of breaking through your own glass ceiling. It's essential to recognize and appreciate any accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem. This allows individuals to track their progress and maintain a positive mindset throughout the journey. Additionally, it is important for individuals to learn from failures rather than being disheartened by them - mistakes can be great learning opportunities when approached with the right attitude. Taking time to reflect on what went wrong or could have been done differently helps individuals adjust their strategies accordingly and become better equipped for tackling future challenges.

Conclusion

Breaking through your own glass ceiling is a difficult but achievable goal. It requires individuals to recognize and acknowledge any self-imposed limits, develop an empowering mindset, be resilient in the face of obstacles and setbacks, and celebrate successes along the way. With dedication and hard work, you can push yourself past any mental or physical boundaries that may be holding you back from achieving success. So take the time to reflect on what steps are necessary for reaching your full potential; with a positive attitude anything is possible!
